How to frame a surfboard
We were asked to frame a 6 foot 3 inch surfboard which had been signed by World Champion Kelly Slater.
The brief was to create a way for the sufboard to be displayed so that it would look great but also be protected from potential damage or deterioration. We always love a challenge…so we said “Yes!”
Given the depth of the board (and the fins) the difficulty was going to be in constructing a deep sub-frame to hold the board. We also had to take into account the potential finished weight of the piece and make sure it could still be hung on the wall.
Glen Andrews, Head Picture Framer at Art Land Indooroopilly, personally took charge of the project and created a design that incorporated the colours of the board as well as creating a modern, timeless effect.
Glen built a special sub frame to hold the board and cater for its depth and curve. Due to the size of the piece it was necessary to use specially crafted oversized materials.
The Art Land state-of-the-art computerised mat cutter was then deployed to cut the acid-free matboards to the exact size and shape and then Glen and the team joined them by hand to create a seamless, clean finish.
The Art Land team carefully assembled the whole framing, using high quality acrylic rather than glass, to minimise weight
A real showcase – the finished surfboard looks amazing and is durable and strong as well.
Unfortunately as soon as we finished Kelly Slater won another world title, but luckily updating the plaque is one of the easiest components of this tricky job!
